7th-century English nun and daughter of King Penda

Edburga of Caistor

Edburga of Caistor was a 7th-century English nun who belonged to the royal house of Mercia. As the daughter of the pagan King Penda, she chose a religious life alongside her sisters, Kyneburga, Kyneswide, and Chinesdre. The group entered the convent at Dormundcastor, also known as Caistor, located in Northamptonshire. She remained in this monastic community until her death in 670, at which time she was interred within the abbey.

Life and death

Following her decision to dedicate herself to God, Edburga lived as a member of the religious community in Northamptonshire. Her sisters also pursued consecrated lives, including Kyneburga, who married King Alchfrith of Deira. Edburga passed away toward the end of the 7th century. Her remains were originally kept at the abbey, though they were lost during a fire that destroyed the site in 1558.

Veneration

The Catholic Church recognizes her as a saint. Her liturgical commemoration occurs annually on June 20. She was historically honored alongside other holy figures, such as Saint Oswald and Saint Lewin, whose relics were once kept in the same location.
