Shinya Aoki is a Japanese mixed martial artist, professional wrestler and grappler who competes in the welterweight division of ONE Championship. He is also signed to the Japanese promotion DDT Pro-Wrestling, where he currently holds the KO-D Tag Team Championship with Junta Miyawaki. Since 2003 he has held several titles in mixed martial arts, including the DREAM Lightweight Championship and the Shooto Welterweight Championship, and he is known for an unorthodox, judo-based grappling style.
Early life and judo

Aoki grew up as a difficult child who was isolated by classmates, and he found a sense of belonging in a judo club during elementary school. He trained far beyond his peers, visiting other clubs and studying wrestling and sambo techniques in books and magazines, which helped shape his eclectic style. His unconventional grappling drew criticism from traditional judo circles, and his conflicts with coaches and teammates eventually led him to leave the university judo team while his interest turned toward mixed martial arts.
Rise in mixed martial arts
Aoki trained under Yuki Nakai at Paraestra Shooto Gym and earned black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and A-class Shooto rank. He made his MMA debut for DEEP in 2003 and later won the Shooto Welterweight Championship. In 2008 he co-founded the Nippon Top Team with Masakazu Imanari and Satoru Kitaoka, a group of elite Japanese grapplers competing in MMA. He also fought in PRIDE Fighting Championships and later joined Dream, where he faced Gesias Cavalcante in the Dream Lightweight Grand Prix.
Significance
Aoki is noted for his submission grappling achievements, including several All Japan Jiu-Jitsu Championship titles and an ADCC Japan Championship. He was among the early MMA fighters to use the gogoplata in competition, a technique he used against Joachim Hansen. His career spans mixed martial arts, professional wrestling and grappling competition, making him a well-known figure in Japanese combat sports.
