venerable religious woman from Ponta Delgada

Margarida de Chaves

Margarida de Chaves was a 16th-century religious woman from Ponta Delgada, in the Azores. Born around 1530, she lived a life of strict devotion and contemplation, which earned her a reputation for holiness. Although she was a matron who married and had four children, her deep religious inclination was evident from an early age. Following her death in 1575, various miracles were attributed to her intercession, leading the Catholic Church to declare her a venerable.

Life and devotion

After marrying António Jorge Correia in 1544, Margarida raised four children, all of whom pursued religious paths. She spent significant time in prayer and lived an austere life. Her reputation for sanctity grew during her illness and at the time of her passing. Her son, Gonçalo, became a canon and worked extensively to support her cause for canonization in Rome.

Veneration and legacy

The devotion to her memory led to the collection of relics, which were associated with various reported healings. While her formal canonization process was not completed, she is often referred to as Saint Margarida. Her life has been documented in several historical works, including a compendium published in Rome in 1620 and later biographical accounts by her descendants.
