Dolores Puig Bonany, known in religion as Dolores de Santa Eulalia, was a Spanish nun born in Berga in 1857. A member of the Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados, she dedicated her life to her religious community, eventually serving in Requena. Her life ended during the Spanish Civil War when she was executed in Buñol in 1936. Because of her death, she is recognized as a martyr by the Catholic Church.
Life and death
After joining her congregation in Valencia in 1886, she took her religious name and made her perpetual vows in 1892. She spent much of her religious service in Requena. In September 1936, she was shot by Republican militia members in Buñol due to her status as a nun, dying alongside her fellow sister, Josefa de San Juan de Dios.
Veneration
The testimony of a surviving sister helped initiate the process for her beatification. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2001. While the Roman Martyrology notes her martyrdom on September 8, her feast day is observed on November 6, alongside other Spanish martyrs of the twentieth century. Her relics are kept in Requena.
