2014 browser game built into Google Chrome

Dinosaur Game

Dinosaur Game

Dinosaur Game (also known as the Chrome Dino) is an endless runner browser game developed by Google and built into the Google Chrome web browser. The player guides a pixelated Tyrannosaurus rex across a side-scrolling desert landscape, avoiding obstacles by jumping or ducking. The game appears when a user tries to open a web page while offline, and it is installed on the devices of roughly 3.62 billion Chrome users as of March 2026.

When a user is offline, Chrome displays an illustration of the pixelated dinosaur together with a notice that there is no internet connection. The game can be started with the space bar or up arrow on desktop, or by tapping the dinosaur on mobile devices. The speed increases steadily until the player hits an obstacle such as a cactus or a pterosaur. The background switches between day and night at set points, and the colour scheme follows the browser's dark mode setting.

Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung of the Chrome user experience team made the game in 2014, and it was released that September. Pterosaurs were added as obstacles in 2015. Over the following years Google added special events, such as an Olympic-themed version in 2020 and a high score saving feature in 2018. The game's source code is available on the Chromium site.
