Colomba Gabriel was a Ukrainian Roman Catholic nun born in 1858 in Ivano-Frankivsk. After receiving her teaching diploma in Lviv, she joined the Benedictine Order under the religious name Janina. Following a relocation to Rome in 1900, she established the Benedictine Sisters of Charity in 1908. She held several leadership roles within her community, including serving as prioress and abbess, before passing away in Rome in 1926.
Life and work

Educated by Benedictine monks in Lviv, she spent much of her early career teaching at her former school. After making her solemn profession in 1882, she rose through the ranks of her order to become an abbess. Following her move to Italy, she founded her own congregation, the Benedictine Sisters of Charity, which eventually expanded to numerous locations including Madagascar and Romania.
Veneration
Her path to beatification began in 1983, leading to her being declared Venerable in 1990. After the validation of a miracle, Pope John Paul II beatified her in May 1993. She is commemorated within the Catholic tradition, with her feast day observed on September 24.
