Later dem move di brodkast go di basement of di Broadcast Centre, Auckland Park for Johannesburg.

Radio 702 change im music format go Top 40 format, on di advice of one American consultant, Bob Hennaberry, and e go carry former Radio LM presenter John Berks from Radio 5. Inside one year, 702 claim nearly one million listeners from PWV area (wey now be Gauteng) while di nationwide Radio 5 get less dan 150,000.

Malcolm Russell, wey be former Rhodesian TV and radio host, and wey host di new Radio 5 Breakfast Show, dem appoint am Programme Director and e stat work to improve di station, with support from Riaan Eksteen wey become Director General of di SABC for 1984. English become di main language and dem change how dem dey do commercial scheduling make e no too much. Dem re-engage presenters on annual freelance contract with shows wey dem name and design by demselves.

Dem launch new evening shows to compete with television, one of dem na Chris Prior - di "Rock Professor". Dem introduce FM stereo nationally, and brodkast extend to 24/7. Di Chuckle and Chat, one live phone-in show with music, dem introduce am as di first talk show on South Afrika music station, and David Blood and Tony Sanderson present am. E become di most popular programme with listenership wey reach around 1 million every night.

Russell make di presenters responsible for dia own success or failure with promise say, wen dia year contract finish, dem go free to renegotiate based on di audience wey dia shows deliver. But Russell remain on salary and e try negotiate di same performance-based contract for imself. Senior management reject di proposal and Russell resign to stat im own company, di Broadcast Development Group, and later dem contract am to help Radio 702 with im repositioning and transition to 702 Talk Radio.
