medieval Irish virgin saint

Tochumra

Tochumra was a holy virgin from medieval Ireland, though historical records suggest she may represent two different women. Recognized in various Irish martyrologies, she is commemorated on June 11. One figure is associated with the territory of Conmaicne, while another is linked to the Diocese of Kilmore. Due to the ambiguity of early records, the exact locations of their lives remain difficult to determine with certainty.

Historical accounts

Early hagiographies and martyrologies, such as those from Tallagh and Donegal, list Tochumra as a virgin. One tradition identifies her as the patron saint of the parish of Tochumracht within the Diocese of Kilfenora. Although different sources mention her in various dioceses, some historians believe these entries might refer to the same individual.

Veneration

The saint was highly honored throughout Ireland. In the Diocese of Kilmore, she was specifically invoked by women during childbirth. Her feast day is observed annually on June 11, a date recorded in several historical calendars and works by hagiographers like Alban Butler.
