The story is set in San Francisco, where a jazz teacher returns home to find his wife has invited their upstairs neighbors to dinner. The couple's marriage is strained, and the evening becomes a tense conversation about resentment, desire and the loud noises coming from upstairs. The neighbors reveal they attend sex parties, and the group's honest exchanges lead to a proposed swap of partners that ultimately goes nowhere. The night ends with the couple confronting their relationship and the possibility of separation.
