Svaty is a Ukrainian, Russian-language comedy series produced by the company Kvartal 95 Studio. Seven seasons were created, along with the musical Novogodniye Svaty (New Year's In-Laws) and a television program called Svaty u plity (In-Laws at the Stove). The series follows two sets of in-laws, a city couple and a rural couple, who clash while looking after their shared granddaughter and gradually form an uneasy alliance.
Broadcast and ban
The premiere screenings aired on the Russia-1 channel in Russia, on ICTV for the first season, on Inter for seasons two to five, and on 1+1 for seasons six and seven in Ukraine. In November 2017, featured actor Fyodor Dobronravov was banned from entering Ukraine for three years for publicly supporting the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, and the series was banned from broadcast in Ukraine days later. Filming of the seventh season was suspended as a result. 1+1 sued the Ministry of Culture over the ban, and in March 2019 the court revoked it.
Criticism
In 2019, the Experts' Commission of the Ukrainian State Film Agency (Derzhkino) criticised the series for containing Ukrainophobic tropes and themes of backwardness.
