martyr of Capua venerated as a saint

Quintus of Capua

Quintus of Capua was an early Christian martyr from Capua. Although specific details regarding his life are unavailable, he is commemorated in the Catholic Church as a saint. Historical records, such as the early fifth-century Hieronymian Martyrology, associate his martyrdom with the date of September 5. While some medieval lists included other companions, modern hagiographical analysis suggests he may have been the sole martyr originally recorded in that specific tradition.

Historical records

The Hieronymian Martyrology, dating to the early fifth century, lists Quintus alongside Arconzio and Donato as martyrs of Capua. Later sixteenth-century revisions by Cesare Baronio mistakenly identified him as Quinzio. However, modern scholars like Hippolyte Delehaye suggest that the other two figures might be fictional results of misreading ancient texts, leaving Quintus as the primary authentic martyr of this group.

Veneration

The Catholic Church celebrates his feast day on September 5. Following the liturgical revisions after the Second Vatican Council, the names of his supposed companions were removed from the Roman Martyrology, focusing the commemoration on Quintus himself.
