Probo of Formia was a 4th-century Christian bishop who served as the second leader of the church in Formia. Succeeding Erasmo in the year 303, he played a significant role in the early Christian community of Ancient Rome. He is recognized as a martyr within the Catholic tradition, having suffered for his faith during a period of significant religious transition.
Life and service
After taking over the bishopric from Erasmo, Probo performed important duties for his congregation. One notable action was the burial of Erasmo's remains within the Formian necropolis. This specific location eventually became the site where a church dedicated to Saint Erasmo was constructed.
Veneration and relics
The remains of Probo are currently preserved in the cathedral of Gaeta. This cathedral is dedicated to the patron saints of the city, Saint Erasmo and Saint Marciano. In the Catholic Church, his memory is honored annually on October 6.
