bishop of Eauze and hieromartyr

Luperculus

Luperculus was a bishop of Eauze who lived during the third century. According to Christian tradition, he served as the second bishop of his see, following Paternus. During the reign of Decius, he traveled to Zaragoza, where he was martyred by the governor Dacian. His steadfastness during his persecution reportedly led to the conversion of several pagans, including a guard captain named Anatolius. He is recognized as a hieromartyr and is venerated within the Roman Catholic Church.

Life and martyrdom

While serving as a bishop, Luperculus is said to have traveled to Spain. In Zaragoza, he faced execution under the authority of the governor Dacian. Some historical accounts suggest he was the same individual mentioned by Prudentius who died around 304 AD. Local Spanish traditions even identify him as the uncle of the virgin martyr Saint Engratia.

Veneration and legacy

The bishop is primarily honored in the Armagnac region and at Tarbes. In Eauze, the cathedral dedicated to him bears his name. His memory is also preserved through the place name Saint-Loubert. While some sources debate his identity with other martyrs of the same name, his legacy remains tied to his episcopal seat and his ultimate sacrifice in Spain.
