Laura Meozzi was an Italian nun born in Florence in 1873 who became a pioneering figure for the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Poland. After studying medicine and joining the Salesian congregation, she spent many years teaching in Italy. In 1922, she moved to Poland to establish educational and charitable works, including orphanages and schools. As the first provincial superior for her order in the country, she expanded their mission across numerous locations, maintaining her commitment to service even through the challenges of the Second World War.
Life and work
Born into a wealthy noble family, Meozzi moved to Rome as a child. Following her medical studies, she entered the Salesian order in 1895. After serving as a teacher and director in Sicily, she relocated to Różanegostok in 1922. There, she founded an orphanage and various schools. Throughout her leadership, she established numerous institutions in cities such as Vilnius, Łódź, and Kraków, continuing this vital work after the war ended.
Veneration
Recognized for her holiness, Meozzi died in Pogrzebień in 1951. Her remains were later moved to a tomb near the parish church of St. Bartholomew. The Catholic Church has recognized her heroic virtues, granting her the title of venerable. Her legacy lives on through several educational and care facilities in Poland that bear her name.
