Hugo de Marchiennes was a Benedictine monk and abbot who lived in the 12th century. Born into a wealthy family in Tournai, he chose a religious life over his father's secular position, a decision that caused significant grief for his mother. After studying in Reims and Laon, he entered the Abbey of Saint Martin in Tournai in 1123. He eventually rose to become the abbot of the Abbey of Marchiennes in 1148, a position he held until his death in 1158.
Life and service
During his leadership as abbot, Hugo oversaw the reconstruction of the oldest section of the abbey church, which began in 1153. He served the community until his passing in June 1158 following an illness. His religious journey included serving as a prior in Tournai and as a sub-prior in Noyon before his election to the abbacy.
Veneration
Historians recognize Hugo as a blessed figure due to his dedicated lifestyle. He is commemorated in the church calendar with a feast day on June 11.
