The Gil Ofarim case, also known as the Star of David scandal, concerns a false accusation made by singer Gil Ofarim in October 2021 against an employee of The Westin Hotel in Leipzig. Ofarim, who is Jewish, claimed he had been treated unfairly and posted a video accusing the employee of antisemitic remarks. Parts of the public showed solidarity with Ofarim, while the employee denied the allegations. Doubts about Ofarim's account emerged within the same month, and the case later led to a criminal trial in Leipzig, where Ofarim admitted his claims were untrue.
Doubts and surveillance footage

Doubts about Ofarim's account arose in October 2021, when surveillance recordings from the hotel were examined. Ofarim had claimed he was denied a room because of a necklace with a Star of David, but the necklace was not visible in the footage. Authorities reconstructed the events in December 2021 and concluded they could not have happened as described. Only one witness at the 2023 trial said she had seen the necklace, leaving the question of its visibility largely unresolved.
Trial and public reaction

The hotel employee filed a complaint, and Ofarim faced charges including defamation and false suspicion before the Leipzig Regional Court. On the sixth day of the trial, in November 2023, he acknowledged that his claims did not correspond to the truth and said he wished to apologize. The proceedings were discontinued subject to a condition. The affair drew wide attention in Germany, prompting debate about how civil society should express solidarity against alleged discrimination and how to avoid premature judgments spreading rapidly on social media.
