Eastern Orthodox priest and Patriarch of Jerusalem

Georgios II

Georgios II was an Eastern Orthodox priest who served as the Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem from 797 until his death in 807. Before ascending to the patriarchate, he held the position of synkellos, serving under his predecessor, Elias II. His leadership occurred during the late eighth and early ninth centuries within the Greek Orthodox tradition.

Life and service

Born around 750, Georgios II dedicated his life to the church. He initially served as a synkellos, a high-ranking official, during the tenure of Elias II. Following this period, he was elected to lead the Jerusalem patriarchate, a role he maintained for ten years until his passing in 807.

Veneration

He is recognized as a saint within the Georgian Church of Palestine. This tradition commemorates his life and service annually on April 7.
