bishop of Armagh in late 5th and early 6th century Ireland

Dubthach the First

Dubthach the First was an Irish bishop who led the see of Armagh from 497 until his death in 513. Born around 450 in Druim-Dearbh, he succeeded Saint Cormac as the sixth coarb in the succession of Saint Patrick. During his sixteen-year tenure, he focused on expanding the church by establishing new sites along the western and northern coasts while also improving existing religious buildings. He was noted for his dedication to education and the moral guidance of his people through the oversight of various schools.

Life and work

As a leader in Armagh, Dubthach sought to emulate the life of Saint Patrick. He was an active administrator who prioritized the instruction of the populace, particularly through the management of the famous school at Armagh. His efforts included the construction of churches in previously unconverted coastal regions and the decoration of existing religious structures.

Hagiography

A tradition recorded in the life of Saint Tigernach of Clones describes a meeting between the two holy men. According to this account, Dubthach passed away while traveling through the plain of Magh Glas. Following Tigernach's prayers and the use of holy water, the bishop was reportedly restored to life briefly, expressing a spiritual connection between his earthly presence and his heavenly dwelling.
