6th-century abbess of Saint-Pierre-les-Dames

Doda of Reims

Doda of Reims

Doda of Reims was a 6th-century abbess of the Saint-Pierre-les-Dames monastery in Reims. A princess of the Ripuarian Franks, she is believed to be the daughter of King Chloderic or a granddaughter of King Sigobert. After refusing a marriage to a courtier, who died in a fall while attempting to abduct her, she sought refuge in the abbey managed by her aunt, Beuve. She eventually succeeded her aunt as leader of the religious community, working to secure its legal protections.

Raised by her aunt Beuve, Doda chose a life of religious devotion over a noble marriage. Following the death of her aunt, she became the second abbess of the monastery. During her tenure, she successfully obtained a charter of immunities from Pepin of Landen to safeguard her community's interests and autonomy.

Veneration

The saint is commemorated on 24 April. She is recognized as a saint within both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions. Her legacy is tied to the historical protection of her abbey and her reputation for chastity.
